Association Agreement European Parliament

The Association Agreement between the European Union (EU) and Ukraine is a comprehensive and ambitious treaty that aims to deepen the political association and economic integration of Ukraine with the EU. The agreement was signed on June 27, 2014, and has been provisionally applied since November 1 of that same year.

The Association Agreement covers a wide range of sectors, including trade, energy, agriculture, justice, and home affairs. It also includes provisions on political dialogue, human rights, and the rule of law. The agreement is of great significance to both the EU and Ukraine, as it represents a commitment to strengthening their partnership and promoting their mutual interests.

One of the key elements of the Association Agreement is the establishment of a deep and comprehensive free trade area (DCFTA) between the EU and Ukraine. This will provide Ukrainian businesses with greater access to the EU market, while also allowing EU companies to trade more freely with Ukraine. The DCFTA covers the elimination of tariffs on trade in goods, the removal of barriers to trade in services, and the establishment of common rules and standards for product safety, consumer protection, and intellectual property rights.

The Association Agreement also includes provisions on energy cooperation, which are particularly important given Ukraine`s strategic location as a transit country for Russian gas to the EU. The agreement promotes the development of a competitive, transparent, and integrated energy market in Ukraine, while also enhancing energy security in the EU.

The Association Agreement also contains provisions on justice, freedom, and security, which aim to strengthen the rule of law and human rights in Ukraine. This includes cooperation on combating corruption, promoting judicial reform, and protecting the rights of minorities and vulnerable groups.

Overall, the Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine represents a significant milestone in their relationship. It is a testament to the shared values and interests of the two partners, and a commitment to further strengthening their ties in the years to come. As Ukraine continues on its path towards reform and integration with the EU, the Association Agreement will play a crucial role in shaping its future.
